Temperate:

Rethinking the Weather App

Being from Arizona, we loved talking about the weather, specifically how hot it was outside. The problem was, the temperature on our tiny screens never really felt like the weather outside. Enter Temperate. We started from the ground up, thinking about how the app should “feel”, how the icons would interact with each other and the beautiful colors the app produced, and even the use of rotation for intuitively displaying the 5 day forecast.

About This Project

As our first foray into the realm of app design and development, we wanted every part of our app to be custom, simple and beautiful. As we explored the app space, we realized that there was a lot of room for simplification, streamlining and improving for a lot of the offerings in the marketplace. Weather is always a hot topic in Arizona (get it), and as such, creating a simple, intuitive weather app became our goal.

Every Degree is Unique

We assigned each degree its own RGB value. No two degrees are the same. This creates subtle variations in the week outlook, and also gives each temperature its own “feel”.  This increases visibility of temperature spikes and dips throughout the weekly outlook, and also creates unique gradients, ensuring no two weekly outlooks will ever be the same.

Custom Climate Icons

We built our icons from scratch, creating simple, easily recognizable iconography within each circle. The circles are inspired by Venn diagrams, overlapping to show various weather scenarios. Through several iterations and refinement, we arrived at our final icon set of roughly 32 single icons, and various combinations thereafter.
